Vending Machine Weddings

If the thought of shelling out hundreds of thousands on the day you exchange your vows with your significant other freaks you out, we’ve got great news! Forget intensive months of planning and the elaborate wedding that comes after. Concept Shed, a prototype lab that creates products from unusual ideas, has finally made weddings possible via a vending machine!

Aptly named AutoWed, this vending machine is perfect for those who don’t mind fuss-free weddings. Simply insert a dollar or a pound (sadly, it’s not available here yet) into the machine, and the wedding march starts playing. Two plastic rings will be dispensed, and bam! You are now pronounced man and wife. You’ll even get a marriage receipt at the end of the little ceremony. Oh, if you ever need to get divorced, don;t worry – you also get a voucher for 10% off an auto-divorce.

The AutoWed looks like a large parking meter, but with a portrait of Jesus – to make your marriage a true holy matrimony? – plastered at the top, a steel keyboard for you to type your names in, speakers to blare out a specially composed wedding march, and a slot where your receipt comes out from after it is printed. The best part of it all is its Cadillac pink colour that is supposedly part of the retro design. Just when you thought weddings in Vegas were the ultimate in terms of tacky… we wonder what they’ll think of next.

The first prototype is currently housed in Marvin’s Marvellous Mechanical Museum, a museum of mechanical machinery and vintage coin games in the United States. Edinburgh Camera Obscura, an optical illusion museum in Scotland, bought the second. As of now, marriages made through the AutoWed are unofficial, but we’re crossing our fingers that the legal system recognises it one day.

AutoWed weddings are also for gay marriages and serious best friendships you probably can’t get out of. Check out other brilliantly ridiculous machinery on Concept Shed’s site.
